mis-en-scene: Friends!!

Hello viewers! I recently learned what mis-en-scene is and I decided to create a post disecting an episode from Friends. Mis-en-scene means "to put in the scene" which is everything the audience can see on screen.

Friends" The One with the Embryos (TV Episode 1998) - IMDb

In this scene, you can see Joey, Chandler, and Ross wearing casual clothes. Joey is wearing Jeans and a shirt with a flannel which can show he is comfortable and is dressing casual for the day. It also shows he is not rich or has a lot of money since the clothes could be second hand or from less expensive stores Chandler is wearing slacks and a sweater which can indicate he had gone somewhere like a restaurant or the grocery store beforehand. Ross is wearing corduroy pants with a sweater which can demonstrate he is more proper and upper class. Even though he is just at Monica's apartment he still dressed nicely and proper. Monica and Rachel are also wearing casual clothes. Monica's sweater and sweatpants shows it is probably a Saturday or Sunday and she is doing laundry while relaxing and cleaning at home. Rachel is wearing casual but nicer clothes. This implies she is the more fashion oriented friend and cares more about her appearance than others.

In this scene, there is a clear view of Monica and Rachel's apartment. By looking at the decoration in the background, you can tell they live in New York City, in the 90's since it was a common look at that time. Also, she has a nice stove and oven which shows how she is a chef because they are expensive meanwhile, her cabinets do not have covers. This shows she cares more about cooking products than what her cabinets looks like. They are also different colors than the rest of the apartment which can mean she is creative and enjoys a variety in color. Much like her blue cabinets, her apartment is purple. This can show how the apartment is more feminine and would clearly mean a woman is living there.  Her different color chairs can show how she pays less attention to color schemes. Monica cares more about the materials within the big apartment that show she is the hostess for most hangouts and enjoys having her friends over.

In this scene, you can see Joey and Chandler's apartment. By looking at the two chairs, you can infer the more masculine energy and feel in the apartment. Also, the yellow couch in the back of the room can mean they do not have a lot of company over because it is smaller and unable to fit a handful of people. The entertainment center is simple and the colors match the rest of the apartment. Their apartment is also smaller which can mean that Joey and Chandler do not make as much as Rachel and Monica do. The decorations in this apartment are similar colors and very random. Inferring that they do not care too much as to what their apartment looks like and usually hang out at Monica's.

Friends" The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate (TV Episode 1994) - IMDb

In this scene, you can see how Rachel is out of context the most. The wedding dress hints purity and innocence. This scene addresses being important for this group of friends and being in the city alone. Phoebe is basically hidden in the scene, covered by most of the group and separated from Rachel. Her clothing choice suggests an extremely unpredictable person as well as wearing pigtails in her hair, which can be typical as a childish appearance. Chandler is wearing a loose and relaxed top. There could be meanings of an absence of confidence and the hybridity of smart and relaxed shows a division of character that Chandler could hold. Joey’s black leather jacket and jeans connotes a confident man who is very outgoing. He appears to be the ‘alpha male’ of the group.  Ross is nearest to Monica and supporting Joey. In this episode he has encountered a combination of outrage and lost-love. The red shirt could suggest these sentiments with the dark under-shirt. The closeness to Monica straightforwardly surmises his relationship with her as the brother. Monica's outfit is exceptionally basic with milder tones. The supports could indicate the 'edgy' character that Monica has. She is well-balanced in her outfit suggesting that she is the individual who could keep the gathering intact. Paul ‘The Wine’ Guy has his back to the audience. This directly connotes that he is not a central character. He is also dressed in a smart casual way.

In this scene, the lighting shows that it is mid-day and a sunny, cheerful day. The coffee house is decorated to show a classic New York place. The reserved sign on the table suggests that the group of friends go there very often and almost everyday. It shows how they are important and common in the coffee house. The laughing of Chandler and Rachel can show how they have a close friendship and most likely made a joke with each other. The brick wall and painting in the background can show the New York setting and how it is the late 90's early 2000's.
